Slipper and Democracy
Democracy
▪ Democracy implies the rule of majority. It’s a political ideology which focuses on principles of popular sovereignty and liberty, and consent.
▪ It emphasizes on the right and duties i.e., to have inherent rights and the ability to contribute to the governance of society.
▪ It also recognizes the indispensability of periodic and fair elections, ensuring the participation of all citizens into the governmental procedures
In this paper, I’ve come up with few points which will substantiate that slipper is a symbolic representation of democracy.
▪ Only people controls the slippers (footwears) to decide on the directions, destinations and even to move. Similarly democracy also is controlled by the people and not vice versa.
▪ Footwears allow people to go to many places without the fear of getting wounds from the path, while democracy too makes people feel secure despite the social inequality prevailing.
▪ Footwears provide comfort and support to people, acting as a base; democracy provides confidence to people since they’re under the control of their representatives.
▪ Footwears are designed uniquely for different purposes, like for jogging, sports/athletics, modelling, dancing, etc. In the same way, democracy is also divided its organs into legislature, executive and judiciary, for defined purposes; this is called the Separation of Powers.
▪Also, we use different footwears for different weathers and climatic conditions, for example, rubber slippers when raining, shoes during winters, flats during summers. Likewise, democracy is also modified according to a country’s history, culture and economic condition prevailing.
▪Footwears require proper maintenance like keeping them dry and clean, to increase their longevity and to make them look presentable. Democracy on other hand also requires proper care and cautious efforts to keep democracy lively and to keep its purpose alive.
▪If the same of slipper (footwear) is being used for a long time, it’ll eventually face wears and tears. Similarly, for democracy to maintain its essence and not to become authoritative, the number of times a person can represent the people and be in power only few times, and so the person in power should be changed periodically.
These above points bring out the justification for the symbolism between slipper (footwear) and democracy.
