Cicero’s Ideas on Slavery and Contemporary Labour System

Roman philosopher Cicero struggled with the system of slavery that was in place at the time. Cicero supported the humane treatment of slaves, acknowledging their inherent humanity and dignity rather than subjecting them to cruel punishment since he believed in natural law. He opposed the prevalent standards of exploitation and brutality by emphasizing the values of justice, fairness, and compassion in relationships with slaves. When we travel back in time to the present, we find ourselves in a somewhat different yet similar environment: a contemporary labor system. In contrast to slavery, where people were viewed as property, modern work relationships are founded on contracts. But in modern companies, traces of injustice, exploitation, and control still exist. The ethical implications of work practices are called into issue by the difficulties that employees frequently encounter in obtaining economic security, autonomy, and fair treatment.

Let's use an ideological lens to examine both:

 Ownership and Control: Cicer emphasis on treating slaves with dignity parallels contemporary discussions on employee autonomy and rights within modern work systems.

 Dignity and Rights: Both Cicero's ideals and modern labor laws strive to uphold the dignity and rights of individuals, albeit in different historical and legal contexts.

 Economic Exploitation: While slavery and modern labor systems differ in legal status, both can involve economic exploitation, highlighting the importance of addressing power imbalances in labor relations.

 Social Justice and Equality: Cicero's advocacy for social justice finds resonance in contemporary efforts to promote equality and diversity in the workplace, underscoring the enduring relevance of these ideals across periods.

Cicero stated that the slave would be freed as soon as he gained knowledge. The aforementioned point is similar to the current job structure such as promotions. To sum up, Cicero's ideas on slavery developed into the foundation of the contemporary labor system.
